Smithsonian Shuttle

The Smithsonian operates a free hourly shuttle bus service from the National Museum of Natural History on the National Mall to the Museum Support Center. The shuttle departs from the Mall entrance of the museum on Madison Drive and arrives at the Museum Support Center 27 minutes later.

You will need a pass to ride the shuttle bus, so please let us know in advance if you plan to ride the shuttle. You will also need a photo ID to board the shuttle and enter the Museum Support Center. Please let us know if you would like to schedule a wheelchair-accessible shuttle bus.

Take the Green Line to the Suitland Station. Turn right as you exit the station, and veer right onto the path that takes you to Silver Hill Road. Follow the sidewalk across the bridge over Suitland Parkway. The Museum Support Center is the second large building complex on the right side of the street, behind a black wrought iron fence. Ask the guard at the entrance to the complex to direct you to the Museum Support Center. The entire walk from Metro to MSC is about 10-15 minutes. You must present a photo ID to enter the Museum Support Center.

From Downtown Washington, D.C.
Take South Capitol Street south past Nationals Stadium, and across the Anacostia River. Take a slight left to get on the Suitland Parkway. Continue on the parkway about 4.5 miles, and take the Silver Hill Road exit. Turn right (west) onto Silver Hill Road. On the right, you will see a black wrought iron gate around the Smithsonian complex. Turn right at the second driveway, and stop at the guard station. Ask the guard to direct you to the Museum Support Center.


From Baltimore, MD and points North
Take I-95 South to the Washington Beltway - I-495/I-95 South (toward Andrews Air Force Base or Richmond). Continue on the Beltway about 17 miles, then take the first exit for Route 4 - Pennsylvania Avenue north (toward Washington, DC). At end of the exit ramp, move one lane to the left, go through 4 traffic lights, and turn left at the 5th onto Silver Hill Road. Go past Suitland High School, the Federal Center, and the Suitland Metro station. On the right, you will see a black wrought iron gate around the Smithsonian complex. Turn right at the second driveway, and stop at the guard station. Ask the guard to direct you to the Museum Support Center.


From Maryland Eastern Shore
Take Route 50 West to the Washington Beltway - I-495/I-95 South (towards Andrews Air Force Base or Richmond). Continue on the Beltway about 8 miles, then take the first exit for Route 4 - Pennsylvania Avenue north (toward Washington, DC). At end of the exit ramp, move one lane to the left, go through 4 traffic lights, and turn left at the 5th onto Silver Hill Road. Go past Suitland High School, the Federal Center, and the Suitland Metro station. On the right, you will see a black wrought iron gate around the Smithsonian complex. Turn right at the second driveway, and stop at the guard station. Ask the guard to direct you to the Museum Support Center.


From Pittsburgh, PA and points West
Take Route 70 east (towards Harrisburg or Philadelphia). Then take I-270 south to the Washington Beltway - I-495/I-95 East. Stay on the Beltway for about 23 miles. Take the first exit for Route 4 - Pennsylvania Avenue north (towards Washington, DC).  At end of the exit ramp move one lane to the left, go through 4 traffic lights and turn left at the 5th onto Silver Hill Road. Go past Suitland High School, the Federal Center, and the Suitland Metro station. On the right, you will see a black wrought iron gate around the Smithsonian complex. Turn right at the second driveway, and stop at the guard station. Ask the guard to direct you to the Museum Support Center.


From Richmond, VA and points South
Take I-95 North to the Washington Beltway - I-495/I-95 East towards Baltimore. At the split, take either the local or express lanes, but continue on 495. Once you have entered Maryland (at the Wilson Bridge over the Potomac), continue for about 3 miles, and take exit 4B, St. Barnabas Road East, towards Marlow Heights. Merge onto St. Barnabas Road, and continue northeast for about 3 miles. Turn right at Silver Hill Road, and immediately get in the left lane. Turn left toward the guard building just inside the black wrought iron gate. Ask the guard to direct you to the Museum Support Center.
